20-20-20 those dry eyes away – Systane

Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) is a growing trend among those hyper-connected in the age of mega-information.

We are almost always in front of our smartphones, the television, streaming IFLIX or Netflix, or accessing the internet for various needs and wants. These are all well and good. In fact, a welcome development, on our part to be able to keep up with the amount of data we have to consume.

The drawback, as most of us forget, is the way we forget to take care of our eyes. Prolonged visual display terminal (VDT) exposure can lead to DES. DES is a common condition that occurs when tears are unable to sustain adequate lubrication for the eyes due to the strain in which we forget to blink more times than we are supposed to or tear ducts cannot produce enough to keep our eyes lubricated due to fatigue and stress.

In order to prevent DES, specially to call center agents, digital nomads, office workers, millennials, and those permanently stuck on digital screens, experts recommend “20-20-20 rule:” look away from your computer display, smartphone, portable digital screen or device every 20 minutes, focus on an object 20 feet away, and look at it for at least 20 seconds. In case you are expecting prolonged exposure to digital displays, the use of artificial tears are also recommended such as Systane Ultra Lubricatig Eyedrops, to rehydrate dry eyes and help maintain moisture on the outer surface of your eyes.
